I posted a random question on OSNews this weekend, What’s you favorite movie?. It got quite a few comments. Although I listed two, I want to, for the record, make a more comprehensive list here. Read on for the meat of it.

First of all, the two movies I mentioned were The Red Violin and The Usual Suspects. I’ll stand by them as two movies I absolutely loved. But the story gets funny from there, because I often refer to Mallrats as one of my favorites. It cracks me up, and it belong there too. And in comedies, I can’t leave out The Life of Brian.

And if that’s wacky, I’d also like to mention both Sense and Sensibility and the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, because real men can appreciate Jane Austen. Or so I tell myself.

I have to mention The Princess Bride, because it’s a masterpiece, and I have to mention The Hunt for Red October, because it’s one of my favorite movies that holds up after multiple repeat viewings.

Under musicals, we have to mention Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

Of course, I have to put a ringing endorsement behind ‘Le Fabuleux destin d’Amelie Poulain,’ referred to, in the USA, as simply “Amelie,” which is one of my favorite romantic comedies ever. And I’ll follow that with Seven Samurai and Iron Monkey, two distinctly Asian movies, both subtitled.

I can’t leave out The American President nor can I pass over It Happened One Night. Both of them rank highly for me. Also V for Vendetta. Love it.

In addition, on the “fun” side, I’d like to mention The Matrix, the entire Star Wars trilogy (the original trilogy), and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

That just about wraps it up for my favorites, but I’m sure I’ve forgotten about 10 more.
