Sorry, but you are wrong. The writers DO know the answers to these questions and they have a plan from the first season already (but not completely from the beginning of the series). Right now, Lost is going towards resolution.

As for Ben being killed off, you are right and wrong. The writers wanted the actor who plays Ben to actually be 'Henry' and get eventually killed off. Then, they would have had a new actor to play Ben (in other words, the "Ben" character did exist in their plans). But when they saw how good the actor was, they wanted to keep him. And so they made him Ben for good. This doesn't really change much of the overall plan.

I have been watching the show since season 2, and I really am not sure the writers even have the answers to your questions.

I am nearly convinced at this point that they are not going anywhere with it and are trying to just leave a bunch of unanswered questions with people to string them along.

I read somewhere that they were not planning to have Ben on the show for that long. He was to be killed but when they saw the bug eyed bastard perform they decided to write him permanently into the show.

I am afraid that they are going to kind of keep bringing in new unanswered questions and just cancel the show when viewership falls through without really doing a good job of bringing it all together. Call me a pessimist.
